Dick, is a student, practitioner and teacher helping organizations to become more coherent and to significantly improve their performance. In this work he uses complex adaptive systems and complex responsive process theories as well as John Bennett's Systematics. As a Plant Manager, he successfully helped transform the DuPont Plant in Belle, West Virginia, from 1987 to 1995 from one of the poorest to one of the best performing plants in the DuPont Company. He retired from DuPont in 1996 to form his own consulting company.

His publications include articles in Barrett-Koehler's Work, The Journal for Quality and Participation, The Economic Development Review and Emergence. He is writing a book that builds on and expands his previous work, The Leadership Dance, Pathways to Extraordinary Organizational Effectiveness. He and his partner, Claire E. F. Knowles, founded the Center for Self-Organizing leadership in November 2001 to help leaders learn, understand and use the processes of this new form of leadership.
